Smart Clothes

WHY I THINK THIS IS IMPORTANT
If you’re interested in augmented reality you must read Rainbows End. Vernor Vinge's 2006 science fiction novel envisions a future of ubiquitous AR. Vigne’s novel brilliantly shows AR in the everyday life of 2025 and augmented reality is dominant. People interact, almost continually, with virtual overlays. And their interactions are controlled by smart clothing providing gesture recognition.

Google and Levi’s has provided us with a taste of what that will be like.

Technology Woven In

Jacquard by Google transforms clothing. It’s an entirely new take on wearables that lets you do more than ever with the things that you love and wear every day. With Jacquard technology woven into the very fabric of your clothes, you can connect to your digital life instantly and effortlessly. With a literal brush of your cuff, you can navigate your life while living it. https://atap.google.com/jacquard/

The Levi's® Commuter Trucker Jacket with Jacquard™ by Google has touch and gesture interactivity woven into the sleeve. When paired with your phone, a simple brush or tap on the sleeve lets you stay connected to your music, navigation and friends without stopping to reach for your pocket.

Jacquard currently offers abilities designed for urban commuters. Here are just some of the things you can do:

Communicate Handle calls and texts without handling your device.

Navigate Stay focused on where you’re going, not your screen.

Music Stay in your groove. Play, pause, and skip through your favorite music.

Wearables, augmented reality, voice and gesture interactions: we're now exploring a new level of interaction with the virtual.

How cool is it to control your music by swiping your sleeve? Not SOOOOO cool, but it is a first step in virtual gesture control. And that’s why I think this is important.
